Is is illegal to rip the video or audio from a posted youtube video, and use it for research. For example: I am in a band and would like to use a live recording of an song to learn how to play it.

I would most likely rip this to a hard disk with shareware software, and then transfer it onto an ipod, to listen to when practicing.

Seriously, if you're just going to listen to it yourself, then who cares about the legality? If you were sharing it, or distributing it, or mashing it up with something else, that would be a different thing, but how could there ever be even the faintest problem with you simply listening to it on your iPod?

Hi

I Googled "rip videos from youtube" and found a plethora of free stuff to download the "something.flv" file . Then you convert it (to .mpeg for audio only, or .MPEG or .AVI formats for A/V) and away you go! I do believe that most clips on Youtube are public domain.
