Anyone out there able to explain why all of a sudden, my itunes on my Mac doesn't detect podcasts on my iphone 3G when the former is plugged into my computer? This wasn't a problem at all until about 3 days ago ... I can add new podcasts that appear and I can therefore delete manually, but the other ones that are on my iphone, are invisible! Tips? Help? - d.b. Montreal, QC

I'm not sure I'm clear on what's happening here - are you downloading podcasts on your iPhone directly that aren't being recognized by iTunes? Or is iTunes not cleaning your old/watched podcasts from your iPhone during synchronization? – variant Mar 13 at 2:13

Hi, Deb. I imagine you may have done this, but it's still worth checking... These instructions work in the Windows version of iTunes. I don't know if the Mac version is different, but I would guess they'd be similar.

  1. Open iTunes, plug in your iPod

  2. Under DEVICES in the menu at the left, click on your iPod

  3. On the Summary tab, look if there's a check next to "Manually manage music and videos"

    • if it is, then you need to tell iTunes to sync with your iPod each time you plug it in (there's a "Sync" button at the lower right of this screen)
    • You can change it to automatically by unclicking that box, and clicking Apply at the bottom right
  4. Click the "Podcasts" tab from the top

  5. Ensure that the box next to "Sync Podcasts:" is checked

  6. Ensure that the box next to "Automatically include" is checked and that "all unplayed" is selected

  7. Finally, make sure that the podcasts in question are checked in the Podcasts: menu

  8. After you've made any necessary changes, click Apply and led your iPod resync
