Dear Nora:

Beginning Friday Feb 12, when I turn on my laptop, a box pops up telling me that it is going to install Windows XP Professional with Front Page; then another box pops up directing me to insert a CD for Windows XP Professional with Front Page. I have no such disc, and I did nothing to ask the computer to try to install whatever this is. I am perfectly happy with the Windows XP that I am currently using. How can I stop this intrusion ?

Best regards, Garry Marnoch

Just to provide some clarification to you, Garry, Front Page is a program made by Microsoft used to develop websites, among other things. This likely wouldn't install a new version of Windows XP onto your laptop, rather just Front Page, which is another application like Word, Excel or Outlook.

I would advise you to make sure you have up-to-date spyware and anti-virus (I recommend the free version of AVG, I would stay away from Norton or MacAfee). Spyware is becoming more and more intelligent, and often disguises itself as legitimate Windows dialogue boxes or system processes. So try to make sure this isn't spyware by keeping your current anti-virus and anti-spyware software up-to-date.

Garry,

Go to Start --> Run --> and type "msconfig" (no quotes), then go to the Startup Tab. You might find one or more office applications that are starting on boot up. Uncheck any boxes where this may be the case. This should curtail this annoyance. You might also use the "Detect and Repair" feature within Office.

Thanks Geakz. All Greek to me. There are 27 applications checked under the Startup tab, but I cannot tell which fire up on Bootup. Some have names like "Rundll32" so I dare not delete them in ignorance. – Garry Marnoch Feb 17 at 17:16
Garry, No worries! Download the freeware program "Starter" from here: codestuff.obninsk.ru/products_starter.html This will show you a list of software programs loading on boot up. Simply uncheck the ones you absolutely don't need to have running all the time. – Geakz Feb 21 at 21:01

If you haven't solved your problem might look at this series of posting which seem similar to your problem: http://www.tech-forums.net/pc/f9/microsoft-office-xp-pro-w-frontpage-phantom-install-popup-question-181052/

"Go to Start, run, type msconfig, then go to the startup tab ..."

"I have seen in the past, entries in msconfig>startup for office applications, once unchecked the issue goes away. You could also use the detect and repair feature within Office."
